Progressive Discipline: Keep your keepers and Lose your Losers

Overview:

It's what you do AND it's how you do it. In this webinar you will learn what to do and how to do it when it comes to employee progressive discipline. Discussions of an employee's attitude or motivation can lead to endless disagreement and wrangling without even reaching agreement that there is a problem! Without that agreement, you are not going to achieve any real change in behavior.

Concentrating on observable behavior leaves no room for disagreement. It makes it that much easier to get to the next step: discussing what must be done to improve the situation. Most people are quick to sense unfairness or a personal dislike directed toward an employee. Even if they, themselves, dislike that individual, they will still feel uncomfortable with a leader who, in their estimate, treats another employee unfairly. Discipline involves changing an individual's behavior to achieve a goal, an objective, or an end result. Most people recognize the need for rules and standards and abide by them. They also recognize the need to discipline those who break the rules. In fact, most people object to an organization that allows people to break the rules or perform poorly without taking an action to stop it. The Progressive Discipline webinar puts the responsibility for resolving the problem in the employee's hands, not the leaders. The leader's role is to encourage self-discipline. Most companies have specific disciplinary procedures. Often, a series of steps is involved:

  • Informal warnings
  • Formal verbal warning
  • Written warning
  • Suspension
  • Termination
Discipline is preventive maintenance, to head off trouble before it begins. Disciplinary action is taken when discipline breaks down. Effective discipline focuses on the behavior, never on the person. It seeks to correct performance problems, not to punish employees. It deals with facts, not opinions. It is objective, not subjective. The leader must focus on objective, observable behavior and avoid subjective reactions to an employee's personality. This webinar shows how the first step in the process is effective coaching. Done correctly, coaching is many times all that is needed. When coaching doesn't work, the next step is progressive discipline. Attending this webinar will show you "What to do," "When to do" AND "How to do it."
